Manatee facts

Everyone wants to see our local manatee, but most people to really know much about them. We are very lucky here at SUP Eco Adventures, because we get to start our day off by paddling in a beautiful area with these gentle creatures. But here are a few facts which might give you a little insight into our local icons. closest relative: no it’s not the cow, it’s the elephant. They are mammals, which mean they must breathe air, just like us.
Danger zone: When the water temperature drops below 68 degrees, the manatees are in real danger of going into shock.
Why 68 degrees: Although they look like they have huge layers of fat, they really don’t have the huge insulation layer of fat like a seal or whale. They have a ribcage which runs the length of their body and protects their vital organs such as lungs.
Biggest danger: Yep, boats. Not just boat propellers which will cut deep into the manatee, but also a boat strike which can easily break a rib and puncture a lung (very bad news for the manatee).
